Ethics and Philosophy of Computers in Society

Initially computers were created as simple calculators but with many technological advances, computers have become more than simple machines and have proved to be more than just machines. Computers are of high value to those that have access to them and serve a wide variety of purposes including research, maintaining databases and records, the discovery of topics and people, sharing of information and data, as well as keeping people in touch. However, some people can get lost in the virtual world and become so intensely immersed in the information on the Internet and all of the resources it has to offer. The Internet plays an important role in the sharing of data and disbursement of information, but we must ask ourselves as a society, at what point do computers have a negative impact on society as a whole and what sort of impact does it have on individuals? Computers are relatively easy to access to in America, but owning one means spending money and time on purchasing hardware, software, and computer related items. It also means there is potential for people to become so financially and personally invested in computers that some people may fail to control their computer use. Information shared on the Internet could be used negatively against the user and could potentially result in Internet fraud, so the importance of ethics and computer security is paramount to computer use. So while computers and the Internet are incredibly useful tools for users to utilize, we need to analyze the potential implications these tools have on the users and the impact on societies in which computers are used.
